Japan - Another funny sign

So you have decided to have some Custom Signs made for your business.  You’ve thought about what you want to say, and who you want to see it.  Once you have made decisions regarding your message, the next step is to begin drafting your design.  Most office signs include written type and images to convey their message.  Your message, as well as the service being offered and the business represented, will give you a reference point when choosing the font and layout of your type.  Whether your advertising goal is to get attention or provide detailed information will also determine the design of your custom signs.

When you are composing your message, think of the corporate logos and advertisements that you like best, and ask yourself what attracts you to these messages.  Knowing why you like what you like is essential in creating a dynamic message; as you identify what is appealing you can then use those insights when creating your own advertisement.

Another thing to keep in mind is to be sure to create a comprehensive and easily understood sign.  Clear readable fonts and proper grammar, spelling and punctuation are also a must.  Literary tools such as alliteration or epigrams can useful in creating a easily remembered tag line.  If you do not already have a tag line for your business, you may want to consider creating one.  Who could forget “Where’s the beef?”, “The nighttime sniffling sneezing coughing aching stuffy head fever so you can rest medicine,” or “Just do it.”  A good tag line is immensely helpful in embedding your business into the consciousness of potential customers.

It is always a good idea to make an aesthetically pleasing sign.  A cohesive sign is one in which the layout, color, graphics and images complement each other and your message.  You also want your sign to show your company’s personality.  If your advertisement is visually appealing, easy to read and catchy enough to be remembered, your custom sign has done its job!

The task of creating an effective sign is largely a creative one.  For those of us who are not creatively geared, there are graphic artists and sign manufacturers who can help you design your sign for maximum effectiveness. It takes time and patience, not to mention familiarity with certain computer programs, to create a truly clean looking, visually dynamic sign.  If you are excited about the idea of sketching your own custom signs, go for it!  If you are not so sure about that, fear not.  Find a sign maker to help you… after all, it is their job!
